In honor of Mother's Day this weekend (and my own mom's upcoming birthday in about week, double whammy!) I thought a post honoring a few of my favorite fictional mother figures was long past due!
There are far fewer outstanding examples of mothers than there should be in YA fiction, if I'm getting up on my soapbox and being honest. I just think there is really an opportunity here to show what a great role model could be, and we're just lacking in that role.
Okay, I'm off my soapbox now, and on to my examples! After all, all we are, we owe to our mothers...
#1 - Molly Weasley, Harry Potter series
Is anyone surprised? From the moment Harry stepped foot onto Platform 9 and 3/4, Molly Weasley was looking out for him as if he was the Weasley the stork forgot to deliver. Not only that, but she was the absolute fiercest mama bear when it came to each of her children as well. Never get between Molly and a redhead, because she might think you're gearing up for a fight.
#2 - Marilla Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables series
Marilla starts as a severe adopted mom who slowly grows into the role of Anne's mom (not an easy feat if you've met Anne Shirley)! Her wit rises to the occasion, however, and her sarcastic nature is a great contrast to Anne's head in the clouds. I love the two of them together, though at first sight, it's doubtful they'll be able to rub elbows, much less be the wonderful duo we know and love.
#3 - Michelle Benoit, Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
Scarlet's grandmother from the Lunar Chronicles - I think this relationship is really underrated. Her grandmother was strong and protective. She raised Scarlet to be strong and fierce, and when Michelle disappeared, Scarlet didn't give up. Scarlet kept the farm going and had enough hope and strength left to keep searching for her grandmother. She never took no for an answer and she always, always trusted her gut. I was an emotional wreck when they finally had their (much too short) reunion.
#4 - Sally Jackson, Percy Jackson series
We come to appreciate Sally more and more as Percy learns the sacrifices she's made to keep him safe simply because of who he is. She married his (horrible) stepfather to protect him (and mask his demigod smell), cool mom move #1. She and Percy constantly prove to said stepfather that blue food does in fact exist (because he said it didn't, dummy), inside joke status and good with food coloring, cool mom move #2 and #3. She also is able to see through the Mist, so as shenanigans goes down, Percy doesn't have to lie to her like other demigods do, Sally just gets it. They have a special bond and even though Percy can't always be with his mom, he knows without a doubt that she's there and she loves him.
#5 - Trina Baker, Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen
According to Juli, she's pretty sensible. Now, that doesn't sound like the ultimate compliment, but it basically is. Mrs. Baker is kindhearted and hardworking, and pretty much keeps this family together. She's there for Juli when she's having Bryce troubles, I mean boy troubles, and she supports Juli in her egg-selling business. She's just an all around great wife and mom, and I love seeing this in lit for young kids!
